Comment: Accident of geography: I live underneath the flight
patterns of Boeing 747s as they fly up and down the West Coast of the United
States. I see about one Boeing 747 an hour, and also assorted Saab, Boeing
737s, and MD-80s during the day. Many aircraft are seen at night but are
unidentified. The departure patterns from SFO, San Francisco International,
lead the departing 747 overhead via the Offshore Three and the Eugen Five.
My house is near the Monterey Peninsula, just to the right of the "W-2858"
writing on the above jet route chart and just to the left of the Salinas
VOR. I am bracketed by Jet Routes J501, J6, J88, and J126. The distance
from SFO to my house is about 65 nautical miles, the same distance from
Kennedy International Airport and the crash site of TWA 800 near East Moriches,
NY. The distance from my house to LAX, Los Angeles International Airport
is about 240 NM, the same distance from Heathrow International Airport to
Lockerbie, Scotland. So, by an accident of geography, I live underneath
major Boeing 747 routes at the same distance as two crash sites, one of
which killed eleven persons on the ground. The danger is real but slight.
Departure patterns are from US Terminal Procedures, Southwest (SW) VOL 2
of 2, 10 Oct 1996; Jet Routes are from IFR Enroute High Altitude, US, H-2
Southwest, 5 Dec 1996; Photos are taken by author and scanned in to web
site.
