Comment: The culprit. Note hinges on top of door and not on forward side where they belong. Design error. OK design for stagecoaches, buses, cars, and trains, not OK for high speed aircraft. Note complexity of locking system; difficult to lock correctly and check locked on dark, cold, noisy, rushed night on the ramp. Top drawing is Boeing 747 door and bottom drawing is DC 10 door both before fatal crashes. 3 Nov 97
